Alabama Gov. Kay Ivey signed SB 277 into law on Wednesday, creating a legal framework for DAO-like decentralized nonprofit organizations. The measure says members generally are not personally liable for the association's activities, and it is expected to take full effect on Oct. 1, 2026.

Co-founder Fernando Martinelli said the protocol will keep running through a restructured, "lean" model, with core contributors expected to move to a new entity, Balancer OpCo, pending a governance vote.
