US Supreme Court to hear Apple appeal over Epic contempt ruling on external-link App Store commissions
The US Supreme Court agreed to hear Apple’s appeal of a contempt ruling in its Epic Games case, focusing on whether Apple can charge commissions on transactions completed via external links. The dispute stems from a 2021 injunction requiring Apple to let developers steer users to third-party payment options, after which Apple imposed a 27% commission that a judge said violated the order and held Apple in contempt. The Ninth Circuit partly upheld that ruling, allowing Apple to recover “reasonable necessary costs” but leaving the rate to be determined. A decision is expected by June 2027, and the outcome could affect Apple’s global App Store pricing and billions of dollars in services revenue.
