ACCC blocks Coles’ Kalgoorlie supermarket and Liquorland plan near airport
Australia’s competition regulator has used newly granted powers to block Coles’ plan to open a second supermarket and a Liquorland store near Kalgoorlie Airport, citing risks to competition. The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission said the acquisition was likely to substantially lessen competition in the local market. It is the first time the ACCC has used the new powers to stop a supermarket expansion. Coles said it disagrees with the decision and is considering an appeal.
