Asian Stocks Slide as Chip Selloff Deepens; Nikkei Drops 4%, Oil Rises Above $85
Asian equities broadly retreated, led by a 4% drop in Japan’s Nikkei 225, while Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. fell 3.6% after raising its capital-spending outlook and Kioxia plunged 13%, halving its market value within a month. Nasdaq 100 futures slipped nearly 1% as Netflix sank 9% in after-hours trading on signs of a second straight quarter of slowing revenue growth, and Alphabet fell 4.4% after reports its flagship AI model delivery is months behind schedule. The Philadelphia Semiconductor Index is down about 19% from a June peak, and Asian chip shares are heading for their biggest weekly decline since early March. Oil climbed, with Brent trading just above $85 a barrel and up 12% for the week amid escalating Middle East hostilities and weaker shipping traffic through the Strait of Hormuz.
