Orionx's suspension of operations and withdrawals following a forensic audit citing a ~$7M custody shortfall is negative for crypto market confidence, reinforcing counterparty and custody risk. The alleged misappropriation and the regulator's statement that Orionx lacked authorization under Chile's FinTech Law add legal and compliance overhang, potentially tightening local access and increasing risk premia for centralized exchange exposure.

Chilean cryptocurrency exchange Orionx has suspended operations and paused customer withdrawals after a forensic audit found a shortfall of more than $7 million.
According to Mars Finance, the audit determined that custodial assets were moved to wallets outside Orionx"s control, leaving the platform underfunded. Orionx alleges the transfers were tied to two founding partners, Joaquín Díaz and Roberto Zibert, along with other former employees, and said it has filed a complaint with Chile"s National Public Prosecutor"s Office.
The complaint claims the transactions took place between 2018 and 2021. Chile"s Financial Market Commission (CMF) said Orionx was not authorized to provide cryptocurrency financial services and that its activities breached the country"s FinTech Law.
Orionx said it cannot guarantee users will be able to recover all funds.
