Federal Judge Pauses Minnesota's Prediction Market Ban
AI مارکیٹ کا خلاصہ
A federal judge's preliminary injunction temporarily halts Minnesota's ban on prediction markets, giving platforms like Kalshi and Polymarket continued access to the state while litigation proceeds. The case spotlights a regulatory jurisdiction conflict between state consumer-protection authority and potential CFTC preemption under the Commodity Exchange Act. Near-term, the ruling reduces immediate compliance and access risk but leaves longer-term regulatory uncertainty unresolved.

A federal judge has temporarily blocked Minnesota from enforcing its ban on prediction markets, pausing the state's crackdown while the lawsuit plays out.
In a preliminary injunction dated July 27, 2026, the court put the restriction on hold, according to MPR News. The order prevents Minnesota from taking enforcement action aimed at pushing prediction market operators out of the state. The injunction is an interim measure, not a final ruling on whether Minnesota's restrictions are lawful.
Kalshi and Polymarket are central to the dispute, as they are among the platforms Minnesota targeted. The case remains active on the federal court docket.
Minnesota's push against prediction markets began earlier this summer, with the state attorney general outlining the state's position in a June 18, 2026 statement. The policy is tied to state legislation, Minnesota Senate File 4511, which describes the state's authority to limit these markets within its borders.
The platforms argue the state is stepping into an area governed by federal law. Prediction market operators have framed event contracts as products covered under the Commodity Exchange Act, placing them within the Commodity Futures Trading Commission's jurisdiction. That legal framing sets up a jurisdictional fight over whether state consumer protection authority can restrict products that platforms say fall under federal commodities regulation.
The injunction gives traders and platforms a near-term reprieve. With enforcement paused, Minnesota cannot act on the ban while the court's order remains in place, CBS Minnesota reported. The bigger legal questions remain open, and the next phases could include additional filings, hearings, and potentially an appeal.
Minnesota's clash over prediction markets is part of a broader run of crypto-related policy debates in the state, including legislation aimed at banning Bitcoin kiosks under HF 3642 and separate moves that would allow banks and credit unions to offer crypto custody.
