U.S. diesel average hits record $5.85 a gallon as Iran war tightens oil supply
U.S. diesel prices climbed to a record average of $5.85 a gallon on Friday, up 55% since the Iran war began in late February. Gasoline averaged $4.14 a gallon, the highest ever for this time of year. Global oil prices hovered near $94 a barrel, well above the $72.50 level seen before the war. U.S. annual inflation was 3.4% in July, still above the Federal Reserve’s 2% target.

US adds 162,000 jobs in August, beating forecasts
US employers added 162,000 jobs in August, far above expectations of 65,000. The Labour Department also revised June and July payrolls higher by a combined 55,000. Restaurants and bars led gains with 59,000 new jobs, while construction added 22,000 and manufacturing 16,000. The labor force rose by 683,000, but average hourly wages increased 3.1% from a year earlier, the weakest pace since May 2021.

Strong August hiring boosts case for Fed hike as Trump renews demand for rate cuts
