Sui Mainnet Stalls After Validator Outage on May 28

Sui said its mainnet suffered a network stall on May 28 after a major validator outage temporarily disrupted transaction processing and settlement. In a post on X, the team said the network was "currently experiencing a network stall" and cautioned users that transactions could be paused while engineers worked to restore service. The issue appeared concentrated in mainnet settlement infrastructure rather than isolated frontend or RPC problems. Sui's public status page later flagged a "major outage" affecting "Sui Mainnet – Validators" and listed "mainnet settlement" as an active incident while a fix was being implemented. Blockchain explorer data suggested transaction processing was stalled for more than an hour during the incident. Multiple system-level transactions showed nearly identical timestamps, including ConsensusCommitPrologueV4, settlement_prologue, and several programmable transactions, indicating the network was not progressing normally over the outage window. As of publication, Sui said it had identified the issue and was deploying a fix. The team had not disclosed a root cause. Status page details indicated the disruption was not uniform across Sui's broader infrastructure. While mainnet validators showed a major outage, public RPC nodes, testnet validators, devnet validators, and related RPC infrastructure remained operational. The status page also showed roughly 99.99% uptime for Sui mainnet validators over the prior 90 days before the outage, suggesting otherwise stable operations aside from the unresolved May 28 incident. The event also underscored the operational complexity of high-throughput blockchains. Newer Layer 1 networks often push speed and scalability through more sophisticated validator and execution designs, which can increase coordination risk when validator infrastructure or settlement mechanisms fail. Summary: Sui confirmed a validator outage disrupted mainnet settlement and temporarily stalled transactions. Status data suggested the incident was largely confined to mainnet validator settlement activity, while RPC access and test/development networks remained online.
